Difference between purpose and complexity stories
What Are Purpose Stories?
Purpose stories are tales of grand ideals, noble intentions, and societal goals that resonate with everyone. They are the stories we love to hear: simple, uplifting, and above all, comforting. They reveal the tip of the iceberg and suggest that with enough goodwill, the world is within our control.

The Problem?
These stories oversimplify reality. They overlook the depth and complexity of the challenges we face. What happens when not everyone shares the same vision? When good intentions clash with economic realities, unintended consequences, and fundamental uncertainties? Purpose stories make us believe in a straight path forward, while reality is a maze of crossroads and detours.
From Purpose to Embracing Complexity

A new language
That’s why I envision a new language. Where purpose stories entice us with a clear horizon, complexity stories invite us to look deeper. They acknowledge that our challenges—from sustainability to social inequality—don’t have simple solutions. These challenges are layered, unpredictable, and riddled with contradictions. Instead of painting a perfect picture, complexity stories bring nuance, honesty, and a sense of personal responsibility to the forefront.
These Stories Demand Courage. The courage to embrace uncertainty, to confront uncomfortable truths, and to engage in dialogue with diverse perspectives. They don’t offer easy answers but build trust and understanding.

Beautiful words touch the heart, but complex stories move the world. It’s time to look beyond the illusion of simplicity and embrace the bigger picture. Only then can we sustainably tackle the challenges of today.
